A former monastery from the 12th century with the original church still intact, this glamorous resort occupies its own island.  Wonderfully attentive staff, and beautiful grounds take you away from the crowds of Venice proper.

Harry’s Bar

The venetian classic since 1931.  The Bellini was created here, and the Cuttlefish in its own ink is divine.

Cafe Florian

In business since 1720, in a marvelous position on Piazza San Marco, its clientele over the years has included Byron and Casanova.  Perfect tea sandwiches and cocktails with impeccable service and a live orchestra.  The ultimate people watching spot in Venice.

Where to shop:

1. Nardi

Home of the blackamoor earrings and brooches.

2. Fortuny

The ultimate in luxurious fabrics from the factory started by Mariano Fortuny.  The factory is closed to the public, and you can visit the gardens on Giudecca Island.

3. Murano
Take a boat ride to the island itself to buy the famed blown glass objets in a myriad a of dazzling designs.
